LGBTQ+ Affirming Therapy in Naples, Estero & Fort Myers
You deserve a therapist who sees all of you — not just the parts that are easy to talk about. Our affirming therapists in Southwest Florida provide a safe, welcoming space where your identity is never questioned, pathologized, or treated as something to fix.
Why Affirming Therapy Matters
Finding a therapist should not mean bracing yourself to explain who you are. Too many LGBTQ+ people have had the experience of sitting across from a well-meaning clinician who does not quite understand — who asks questions that feel more like a lesson plan than a conversation, who stumbles over pronouns, or who treats your identity as the thing to be fixed rather than a part of who you are. That kind of therapy is exhausting. It asks you to do emotional labor before you have even started the actual work.
Affirming therapy is different. It starts from the understanding that your sexual orientation and gender identity are natural, valid parts of your experience — not symptoms, not phases, and absolutely not something that needs to be corrected. This is not conversion therapy. It is therapy where your identity is honored from the first moment, so you can focus on what actually brought you in: the anxiety that will not quiet down, the relationship that feels stuck, the grief of family rejection, the weight of living in a world that still carries prejudice.
LGBTQ+ individuals face unique stressors that a therapist needs to understand deeply — not just intellectually, but in their bones. Minority stress, the toll of navigating homophobia or transphobia, coming out at any age, the complexity of chosen family versus family of origin, internalized stigma that can take years to untangle, relationship dynamics that do not follow a heteronormative script, and the particular loneliness of being closeted in Naples, Estero, or Fort Myers — these are not footnotes. They are central to your experience, and your therapist should already know that.
Is LGBTQ+ Affirming Therapy Right for You?
You do not need to be in crisis — or even fully certain about your identity — to benefit from working with an affirming therapist. If any of the following resonate, this may be the right fit for you:
- ✓ Navigating coming out — to family, friends, coworkers, or yourself
- ✓ Relationship challenges — communication, intimacy, trust, or navigating non-traditional dynamics
- ✓ Anxiety or depression that feels connected to your identity or how others respond to it
- ✓ Family acceptance struggles — rejection, conditional love, or strained relationships
- ✓ Exploring your gender identity — questioning, transitioning, or processing dysphoria
- ✓ Simply wanting a therapist who genuinely understands LGBTQ+ life without you having to explain it
Many of these experiences overlap with other concerns we treat. If anxiety is a significant part of what you are dealing with, our anxiety therapy page offers more detail on our approach. If persistent sadness or low motivation is involved, depression counseling may also be relevant. For relationship-focused work, explore our couples counseling or individual therapy pages. All of these services are provided within an affirming framework.
Our Approach
Our affirming therapists do not treat your identity as a separate clinical issue. Instead, affirmation is woven into the fabric of how they work — it shapes how they listen, what they ask, and how they understand the challenges you bring to therapy. This foundation is then integrated with proven evidence-based approaches tailored to your specific needs.
Much of our work is informed by the minority stress model, originally outlined by Ilan Meyer (2003) in Psychological Bulletin. Meyer's foundational research demonstrated that LGBTQ+ individuals experience excess stress — including experiences of prejudice, expectations of rejection, hiding and concealing, and internalized homophobia or transphobia — that directly contributes to higher rates of anxiety, depression, and other mental health concerns. Understanding minority stress means your therapist will not treat your distress as if it exists in a vacuum. They will recognize the social and systemic forces that contribute to what you are feeling.
Building on this framework, our therapists draw from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) to help you identify and challenge thought patterns shaped by stigma — the internalized beliefs that you are "too much," "not enough," or somehow wrong for being who you are. We also integrate Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), which helps you build psychological flexibility and live according to your values rather than organizing your life around avoiding pain or rejection. Pachankis (2014) published evidence in Clinical Psychology Review supporting the effectiveness of CBT-based approaches specifically adapted for LGB minority stress, demonstrating significant reductions in depression, anxiety, and alcohol use.
For clients who carry the wounds of bullying, family rejection, or other forms of trauma related to their identity, we incorporate trauma-informed care and, when appropriate, EMDR therapy to help process those experiences so they no longer hold the same power. Every treatment plan is collaborative, and your therapist will check in regularly about what is working and what needs to shift. The goal is not just symptom relief — it is helping you build a life where your identity is a source of strength, not stress.

What to Expect
From the moment you reach out, your experience is affirming. When you call our office or fill out our contact form, we will never make assumptions about your gender, your pronouns, your partner, or your family structure. You are welcome to share whatever feels comfortable, and we will follow your lead.
Your first session is a chance to get to know your therapist and to be known. If you are curious about what the process looks like, our article on what to expect in your first therapy session can help you feel prepared. We will ask about what brought you in, what your life looks like right now, what you are hoping for, and how you want to feel in the therapy space. There is no checklist of identity questions — your therapist is there to listen, not to categorize. If your identity is central to what you want to work on, we will explore that together. If it is simply part of the background of your life and you are here for something else entirely, that is perfectly fine too. The point is that you never have to wonder whether your therapist is safe.
Sessions are typically 50 minutes and are held weekly, though frequency can be adjusted to fit your needs. We offer both in-person sessions at our Naples, Estero, and Fort Myers offices and telehealth sessions for clients anywhere in Florida. Many LGBTQ+ clients appreciate the privacy and convenience of virtual sessions, especially in communities where being seen entering a therapist's office may feel vulnerable.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is this conversion therapy?
Absolutely not. LGBTQ+ affirming therapy is the opposite of conversion therapy. We do not attempt to change, suppress, or discourage any aspect of your sexual orientation or gender identity. Your identity is not the problem — it is honored, respected, and celebrated in every session. Our approach is grounded in the established position of every major mental health organization that conversion therapy is harmful and ineffective. Affirming therapy helps you navigate the challenges you face in a world that is not always welcoming, while building on the strengths that are already part of who you are.
Do I have to be out to start therapy?
No. You do not need to be out to anyone — including yourself — to begin therapy. Many clients come to us while they are still questioning, exploring, or not yet ready to share their identity with others. Therapy is a confidential space where you can process your feelings at your own pace, without pressure or expectations. Whether you are fully out, partially out, or just beginning to explore these questions, you are welcome here exactly as you are.
Can my partner come to sessions?
Yes. We offer couples counseling for LGBTQ+ partners, and your partner is welcome to join you for sessions. Whether you are navigating communication challenges, working through a difficult transition together, or simply want to strengthen your relationship, our therapists provide a space where your relationship is treated with the same respect and attention as any other. You can also attend individual sessions on your own — the choice is always yours.
Do you work with transgender and nonbinary clients?
Yes. Our affirming therapists work with clients across the full spectrum of gender identity, including transgender, nonbinary, genderqueer, gender-fluid, and questioning individuals. We can support you through social transition, navigating relationships and family dynamics, managing gender dysphoria, processing the emotional impact of discrimination, and building resilience. We use your correct name and pronouns from the very first interaction.
Do you accept insurance for LGBTQ+ affirming therapy?
Yes. Florida Coast Counseling accepts most major insurance plans at our Naples, Estero, and Fort Myers locations. LGBTQ+ affirming therapy sessions are billed the same as any other therapy session — there is no additional cost. We recommend calling our office at (239) 427-1833 or visiting our contact page so we can verify your specific benefits before your first appointment.
