Individual Therapy in Naples, Estero & Fort Myers

A dedicated space to be heard, understood, and supported. Individual therapy gives you the room to work through whatever you are facing -- on your terms, at your pace.

What Brings People to Individual Therapy

People come to individual therapy for all kinds of reasons, and there is no wrong one. Maybe you are dealing with anxiety that will not quiet down, a sadness that has lingered longer than you expected, or a life transition that has left you feeling unmoored. Perhaps a relationship ended, a career shifted, or you simply woke up one day realizing that the way you have been coping is not working anymore.

Sometimes the reason is less specific. You might feel stuck, unfulfilled, or like you are going through the motions without really living. You might be carrying stress that shows up in your body -- headaches, trouble sleeping, a tight chest -- even when nothing seems particularly "wrong" on the surface.

Other times, people reach out because they want to understand themselves better. Why do they keep repeating the same patterns? Why do certain situations trigger such strong reactions? Why does it feel so hard to set boundaries or ask for what they need?

Whatever brought you here, individual therapy is a space where you can explore all of it without judgment. You do not need to have a diagnosis or be in crisis. You just need to want something to be different.

Is Individual Therapy Right for You?

You do not need a diagnosis or a crisis to benefit from individual therapy. If any of the following feel familiar, working with a therapist could help:

  • Feeling stuck, unfulfilled, or like you are just going through the motions
  • Struggling with a life transition -- a move, career change, loss, or new chapter
  • Wanting to understand yourself better and why you do what you do
  • Relationship patterns you want to change -- people-pleasing, withdrawal, or conflict avoidance
  • Emotional reactions that feel out of proportion to the situation
  • Needing a confidential space to process thoughts and feelings without burdening others

If your concerns center on a specific relationship, couples counseling may also be worth exploring. If worry or nervousness is a primary struggle, our anxiety therapy page goes deeper into how we treat anxiety specifically. And if persistent sadness or low motivation is part of the picture, our depression counseling services may be a good complement to individual therapy.

Our Treatment Approach

At Florida Coast Counseling, we believe therapy works best when it is tailored to you -- not when it follows a rigid script. That is why every therapist on our team draws from multiple evidence-based approaches and adjusts their style to match what you need.

Research consistently shows that psychotherapy is broadly effective. In The Great Psychotherapy Debate, Wampold (2015) reviewed decades of evidence and found that therapy produces reliable, meaningful improvement across a wide range of conditions -- and that the quality of the therapeutic relationship is one of the strongest predictors of success. Similarly, meta-analyses compiled in Bergin and Garfield's Handbook of Psychotherapy and Behavior Change (Lambert, 2013) show that approximately 80% of therapy clients improve compared to untreated controls. These are not modest effects -- they reflect real, lasting change.

Norcross and Wampold (2011), writing in Psychotherapy, found that evidence-based therapy relationships -- characterized by empathy, collaboration, and responsiveness to client needs -- are just as important as the specific techniques used. This aligns with what we see in our own practice every day: therapy works best when you feel genuinely understood by the person sitting across from you.

Some of the modalities our therapists use include Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) for identifying and changing unhelpful thought patterns, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) for building psychological flexibility and living according to your values, EMDR for processing stuck memories and distressing experiences, and mindfulness-based approaches for developing present-moment awareness and emotional regulation.

Other therapists on our team incorporate psychodynamic therapy to explore how past experiences shape current patterns, person-centered therapy that honors your innate capacity for growth, Internal Family Systems (IFS) for understanding the different parts of yourself, and Gestalt therapy for deepening awareness of your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors in the present moment.

The common thread across all of our work is a genuine, collaborative relationship. Your therapist is not there to tell you what to do. They are there to help you discover what works for you -- to ask the right questions, offer new perspectives, and walk alongside you as you make meaningful changes in your life.

Finding the Right Approach

Individual therapy encompasses many modalities. Here are some of the approaches our therapists use within individual therapy:

Approach Best for How it works
CBT Anxiety, depression, negative thought patterns Identifies and restructures unhelpful thoughts and behaviors
Mindfulness Overthinking, stress, emotional reactivity Builds present-moment awareness so difficult thoughts lose their grip
ACT Feeling stuck, avoidance, values disconnection Focuses on living according to your values rather than eliminating discomfort
EMDR Trauma, distressing memories, intense emotional reactions Reprocesses memories so they no longer trigger overwhelming responses
DBT Emotional dysregulation, interpersonal difficulties Teaches distress tolerance, emotion regulation, and relationship skills

Many clients benefit from a combination of approaches. Your therapist will recommend a starting point based on your needs and goals, and adjust as you progress.

What to Expect in Sessions

Your first session is a chance for us to get to know each other. Your therapist will ask about what is bringing you in, your background, and what you are hoping to get out of therapy. There is no pressure to share everything at once -- just enough for us to start understanding where you are and where you want to go.

From there, sessions are shaped by your needs. Some weeks might focus on processing something that happened during the week. Other sessions might involve learning new skills, exploring deeper patterns, or simply having a space to think out loud with someone who genuinely listens. Your therapist will check in regularly to make sure therapy feels useful and to adjust the approach if needed.

Sessions are typically 50 minutes and can be scheduled weekly, biweekly, or at whatever frequency works for your life. We offer both in-person sessions at our Naples, Estero, and Fort Myers offices, as well as telehealth appointments for anyone in Florida.

Many clients tell us that simply having a consistent space to be honest and vulnerable -- without worrying about burdening anyone -- is transformative in itself. Therapy is one of the few places in life where the entire hour is truly about you.

Support for Eating Disorders

If your relationship with food, body image, or weight has become a source of distress, therapy can help. Our therapists Mary Lisa Grimmer and Stephanie House have experience working with clients navigating eating disorders and disordered eating patterns, including binge eating, restrictive eating, and the emotional cycles that keep these behaviors in place. Treatment focuses on understanding the function the behavior serves, developing healthier coping strategies, and rebuilding a more balanced relationship with food and your body.

Self-Esteem & Codependency

Low self-esteem can quietly shape every area of your life -- how you show up in relationships, whether you speak up at work, how you handle conflict, and even how you talk to yourself when no one's listening. Therapy helps you identify the beliefs driving that inner critic, understand where they came from, and build a more grounded sense of your own worth. Several of our therapists specialize in this work, including Emily Korolevich, Priscilla Bovi, and Micki Besse.

If you find yourself constantly putting others' needs ahead of your own, struggling to set boundaries, or staying in relationships that don't serve you, you may be dealing with codependent patterns. Therapy can help you recognize these dynamics, build healthier boundaries, and learn that taking care of yourself isn't selfish -- it's necessary.

Therapy for Men

Many men grow up hearing that asking for help is a sign of weakness, which can make the idea of therapy feel uncomfortable or even off-limits. The truth is that reaching out takes courage, and the issues men often carry -- stress, anger, relationship strain, burnout, grief, or just a sense that something isn't right -- respond well to therapy when given the chance. Our therapists provide a straightforward, judgment-free space where you can talk openly without feeling like you're being analyzed or fixed.

Therapy for Women

Women often carry the emotional weight of their families, careers, and relationships while putting their own needs last. Therapy gives you a space that is entirely yours -- to process what you're feeling, set boundaries, and reconnect with what matters to you. Whether you're navigating motherhood, career pressure, relationship concerns, body image, or the cumulative toll of doing it all, our therapists understand the unique challenges women face and can help you find your footing again.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if individual therapy is right for me?

If you are struggling with something and wish you had someone to talk to who could offer more than just friendly advice, individual therapy is likely a good fit. You do not need a specific diagnosis or to be in crisis. Therapy is for anyone who wants to understand themselves better, work through challenges, develop healthier coping skills, or simply have a dedicated space for self-reflection and growth.

How long will I need to be in therapy?

There is no set timeline. Some people come for a few months to work through a specific issue and leave with the tools they need. Others find that ongoing therapy supports their long-term mental health, similar to how regular exercise supports physical health. We will regularly check in about your progress and goals, and you are always free to adjust the frequency or wrap up when you feel ready.

What if I do not click with my therapist?

The relationship between you and your therapist is one of the most important factors in successful therapy. If the fit does not feel right, we encourage you to speak up -- either with your therapist directly or by contacting our office. We have 15 therapists with different styles and specialties, and we are happy to help you find a better match within our practice. There is no judgment in recognizing that a different connection might serve you better.

Do you accept insurance for individual therapy?

Yes, we accept most major insurance plans for individual therapy. When you contact us, we can verify your benefits and let you know what your out-of-pocket costs will be before your first appointment.
