Depression Counseling in Naples, Estero & Fort Myers
When everything feels heavy and the things that used to matter don't seem to anymore, you deserve more than someone telling you to "think positive." Our therapists in Naples, Estero, and Fort Myers provide real, evidence-based support for depression.
What Depression Looks Like
Depression is not just feeling sad. It is a heaviness that settles into your bones and makes even simple things -- getting out of bed, returning a phone call, deciding what to eat -- feel like enormous tasks. For many of our clients in Collier County and Lee County, depression shows up quietly. You may still go to work, still show up for your family, still smile when someone asks how you are. But underneath, you are running on empty, going through the motions of a life that no longer feels like your own.
The symptoms of depression can look different from person to person. For some, it is a persistent sadness or emptiness that never quite lifts. For others, it is irritability, numbness, or a frustrating inability to feel pleasure in things that used to bring joy -- a sunset over the Gulf, dinner with friends, hobbies you once loved. Physical symptoms are common too: disrupted sleep, changes in appetite, chronic fatigue, unexplained aches, and a foggy mind that makes concentrating feel impossible.
One of the cruelest things about depression is how it distorts your thinking. It tells you that things have always been this way, that they will never get better, and that asking for help is a sign of weakness. It may convince you that you are a burden to the people around you. These thoughts feel absolutely real when you are in the middle of a depressive episode, but they are symptoms of the illness -- not the truth. Depression is treatable, and reaching out to a therapist is not weakness. It takes real courage.
Is Depression Counseling Right for You?
You do not need to hit rock bottom before reaching out. If any of the following feel familiar, working with a therapist could help:
- ✓ Persistent sadness, emptiness, or tearfulness that lasts most of the day
- ✓ Loss of interest or pleasure in activities you used to enjoy
- ✓ Changes in sleep or appetite -- too much, too little, or unpredictable
- ✓ Withdrawing from friends, family, or social activities
- ✓ Difficulty functioning at work, school, or in daily responsibilities
- ✓ Feelings of hopelessness, worthlessness, or guilt that will not lift
Depression often overlaps with other concerns. If you are also experiencing persistent worry or panic, our anxiety therapy page may be relevant -- anxiety and depression frequently co-occur, and our therapists are experienced in treating both. If your depression is connected to the loss of a loved one, our grief counseling services may also apply. For depression rooted in past experiences, trauma and PTSD therapy can address the underlying causes. And if you are feeling crushed by daily pressures on top of low mood, our stress management services can complement depression treatment.
Our Treatment Approach
At Florida Coast Counseling, we approach depression treatment with the understanding that your experience is shaped by your unique history, biology, relationships, and circumstances. There is no single "cure" for depression, but there are well-researched, highly effective treatments that can help you feel significantly better -- and our therapists in Naples, Estero, and Fort Myers are trained in several of them.
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is one of the gold-standard treatments for depression. A comprehensive meta-analysis of 115 studies found CBT to be highly effective for adult depression across a range of severity levels (Cuijpers et al., 2013, Clinical Psychology Review). It works by helping you recognize the negative thinking patterns that keep depression going -- thoughts like "nothing will ever change" or "I am not good enough" -- and teaching you to evaluate and reframe them in more balanced, accurate ways. CBT also incorporates behavioral activation, which involves gradually reintroducing meaningful activities into your life to break the cycle of withdrawal and low motivation. Research has shown that behavioral activation alone can be as effective as antidepressant medication for severe depression (Dimidjian et al., 2006, Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology).
Many of our therapists also draw on mindfulness-based approaches, which research shows are particularly effective at preventing depressive relapse. Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) has been shown to reduce the risk of relapse by approximately 50% in patients with three or more previous depressive episodes (Segal et al., 2010, Archives of General Psychiatry). These techniques help you develop awareness of your thought patterns without getting pulled into them, creating space between a negative thought and your response to it. For clients whose depression is connected to grief, trauma, or difficult life events, our team may incorporate trauma-informed care, Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT), or Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). When depression co-occurs with anxiety, relationship difficulties, or other concerns -- which is common -- we address the full picture rather than treating symptoms in isolation. Treatment at our Southwest Florida offices is always personalized and collaborative.
Which Approach Is Right for You?
| Approach | Best for | How it works |
|---|---|---|
| CBT | Negative thinking patterns, low motivation, mild to severe depression | Identifies and restructures distorted thoughts while gradually reactivating meaningful behaviors |
| Mindfulness / MBCT | Recurring depression, rumination, relapse prevention | Builds awareness of thought patterns so you can disengage from depressive spirals before they take hold |
| ACT | Depression with values disconnection, emotional avoidance | Helps you reconnect with what matters and take committed action even in the presence of difficult feelings |
| Trauma-Informed / CPT | Depression linked to past trauma, grief, or adverse experiences | Addresses the root experiences driving depressive symptoms through structured processing |
| Individual Therapy | Complex or co-occurring concerns, need for flexible approach | Integrates multiple modalities tailored to your specific needs and goals |
Many clients benefit from a combination of approaches. Your therapist will recommend a starting point based on your symptoms and goals, and adjust as you progress.
What to Expect in Sessions
We know that reaching out when you are depressed is one of the hardest things you can do. The first session is designed to be as comfortable as possible. Your therapist will take the time to understand what you have been experiencing, how long it has been going on, and what matters most to you. You do not have to have your thoughts perfectly organized -- just show up as you are. That is enough.
In subsequent sessions, you and your therapist will work together on the specific patterns that are keeping you stuck. This might include identifying and challenging distorted thoughts, gradually building positive activities back into your week, processing grief or loss, improving sleep habits, or learning to set boundaries that protect your energy. Between sessions, your therapist may suggest small, manageable exercises to practice -- not as homework you will be graded on, but as gentle experiments to help you notice what helps.
Recovery from depression is rarely a straight line. There will be weeks that feel like breakthroughs and weeks that feel like setbacks. Your therapist will be honest with you about this process and will walk alongside you through all of it. Our goal -- whether you are visiting our Naples office, our Estero location, our Fort Myers office, or connecting through telehealth -- is to help you rebuild a life that feels meaningful to you. Not a perfect life, but one where you can feel present, engaged, and genuinely hopeful about what is ahead.
Bipolar Disorder
Bipolar disorder involves cycles of depression and elevated mood (mania or hypomania) that can disrupt relationships, work, and daily functioning. The depressive episodes can feel identical to major depression -- which is why many people with bipolar disorder initially seek help for depression. Therapy plays an important role alongside medication management in helping you recognize mood patterns, develop strategies for stability, and manage the emotional fallout that mood swings leave behind.
Our therapist Stephanie House has experience working with clients navigating bipolar disorder and uses DBT and CBT to help build emotional regulation skills, improve sleep and routine consistency, and reduce the impact of mood episodes on your life. If you've been diagnosed with bipolar disorder or suspect you may be experiencing it, we can help.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between sadness and clinical depression?
Sadness is a normal, temporary emotional response to difficult events. Clinical depression, on the other hand, persists for weeks or months and affects your ability to function in daily life. Key differences include duration (depression lasts most of the day, nearly every day, for at least two weeks), intensity (it interferes with work, relationships, and self-care), and scope (it often involves physical symptoms like changes in sleep, appetite, and energy). If low mood is consistently getting in the way of living your life, professional support can help.
What therapy approaches do you use for depression in Southwest Florida?
Our therapists use several evidence-based approaches for depression, including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), which addresses negative thought patterns that maintain depressive symptoms; mindfulness-based strategies that help you stay present rather than ruminating; Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) to reconnect with your values; and trauma-informed approaches when depression is connected to past experiences. Your therapist will collaborate with you to determine which methods are the best fit for your unique situation.
How long does depression counseling usually take?
Depression treatment varies from person to person. Some clients experience meaningful improvement in 10 to 16 sessions of structured therapy like CBT, while others benefit from longer-term support -- especially if depression is long-standing or co-occurs with other concerns like anxiety or trauma. We check in regularly about your progress and adjust your treatment plan as you grow. The goal is always to help you build skills and confidence so you can sustain your well-being independently.
Can therapy help if I am already taking medication for depression?
Yes, therapy and medication often work very well together. Research consistently shows that combining talk therapy with medication tends to produce better outcomes than either approach alone. Therapy helps you build coping skills, address underlying patterns, and work through the life circumstances contributing to your depression -- things medication alone cannot do. We are happy to coordinate with your prescribing physician or psychiatrist to ensure your care is aligned.
Do you offer telehealth for depression counseling?
Yes, we offer telehealth sessions for depression counseling to anyone located in Florida. Telehealth can be especially beneficial for individuals experiencing depression, as low energy and motivation can make leaving the house feel overwhelming. Virtual sessions use the same proven therapeutic approaches as in-person visits at our Naples, Estero, and Fort Myers offices. Many clients appreciate being able to attend from the comfort of their own home.
What is the most effective therapy for depression?
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is the most extensively researched therapy for depression and is considered a first-line treatment by major clinical guidelines. It works by helping you identify and change the negative thought patterns and behaviors that keep depression going. Other effective approaches include Behavioral Activation, which focuses on gradually increasing meaningful activities, and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), which helps you reconnect with your values. Your therapist will recommend the approach that fits your situation best.
Why am I depressed when nothing bad has happened?
This is more common than most people realize, and it does not mean your depression is less valid. Depression can be triggered by gradual changes -- a slow drift away from activities you used to enjoy, increasing isolation, a shift in routine, or the accumulation of low-level stress over time. Sometimes there is no clear external trigger at all. Depression is a real condition that affects brain chemistry and functioning regardless of whether your life looks fine on paper. If you're feeling consistently low, disconnected, or unmotivated, those feelings deserve attention.
